Divide your reading into chunks. Breaking it down will help to keep you focused for longer, and let you divide up important information rather than trying to understand it all at once.
Actively read the segment before taking notes. Getting a big picture overview of the text ensures that you can link concepts and know which facts are most relevant.
Use sticky notes to record key information. This is particularly helpful if you can’t write in the book, and will make it easy to colour-code and transfer information to your notes later.
Paraphrase information from the text. Writing down facts verbatim won’t help you memorize them as much as reworking them into your own words.
Use shorthand. To maximize the information written down, develop your own form of shorthand and use images often.
Look for a course outline or objectives beforehand. If the lecturer posts any information, use it to guide your note taking and answer the points provided, as they’re the most likely to reappear on tests.
Pay attention to transitional words and gestures. Typically, they indicate that the lecturer is about to move on to a major idea or key point, and that you should listen attentively to whatever follows.
Don’t transcribe the lecture! The point of taking notes is to capture key information, and trying to write down everything the lecturer says won’t allow you to process the most important elements.
Notebooks are pretty vital to studyblr, whether for class notes or a bullet journal, so here are some of my top choices. They include perennial favourites and new brands which you may not have seen before, which should hopefully encompass any price range!
Leuchtturm 1917 ($16 - $32.99) - These classic studyblr notebooks have the most features, with an incredible array of colours, papers, an index, back pocket, page numbers, elastic, and ribbon. The 5.75 x 8.25 in notebooks, with 249 pages apiece, do come with a fairly hefty price tag, and are somewhat of an investment. They’re very nice to use, but may be a bit too expensive for some price ranges.
Peter Pauper Mid-Size($10.99) - These notebooks are 6 x 8 in, with 160 pages, and also comes in a smaller size. I’ve worked my way through two, and they come in so many cute patterns, and have high quality paper which doesn’t let pens bleed. My favourite design is definitely the dapper foxes!
Barnes & Noble ($7.95) - This notebook is 6 x 8 in, with 160 pages, and comes in other designs. It’s affordable (although it doesn’t come with an elastic or back pocket), and looks extremely sleek! It’s also recycled, which is definitely an upside. The paper isn’t nearly as great as others on this list, so it does have slight bleeding, but not enough to make it an issue.
Moleskine Classic($12.91) - Another studyblr favourite, these 5 x 8.25 in notebooks come in a variety of papers, with 192 pages, and hardcover or softcover options. They’re high quality notebooks, but can be quite costly in comparison to others on the list.
Paperblanks Mini Journals($11.00) - These are some of the smallest notebooks, at only 3.75 x 5.5 in, with 176 pages, but their designs are absolutely lovely! This collection is origami-inspired, and while they’re a little more expensive, the notebooks are very high quality and certainly worth it.
Piccadilly Color Essential($5.38) - I found these in Barnes & Noble, and fell in love! They have a range of gorgeous colours, and they’re hardcover 5 x 8 in notebooks with 192 pages, and they come with a pocket, ribbon, and elastic. They’re a bit more expensive online ($12.95), but if you can find them in-store then they’re one of the least expensive yet still high quality notebooks on the list.
Word. ($9.99 for 3) - Easily the least expensive, with gorgeous cover designs! The downside of these is that each 3.5 x 5.5 in notebook comes with only 48 pages, and these don’t have a back pocket or elastic. However, they’re still very affordable at just over $3 per book, and look incredible.
Good luck choosing the perfect notebook for your notes, calendar, or bullet journal, and I hope this helps you out!
